My Anti-resolution Resolution

I made it a point to avoid resolutions in December.

Normally, this would be the time I’d be frantically reviewing the closing year and dreaming up arbitrary goals for the new one. I’ve made vision boards that I thought were aligned with my goals, made journal entries that were lies, and told others about my “big” year ahead.

Not this time. In December, I completely avoided planning for 2026. Even now, a week into January, I haven’t set anything in stone.

While I’m changing the way I approach the new year, I also changed how I closed out the previous one. More on that to come.

Today, I’m sharing about a fun little thing that happened to me last week. It got me thinking about 2026 and a few of the hobbies I’m dreaming about now that I have more time after erasing social media from my life.

It also got me thinking about the importance of talking about the goals we’ve set. See, when we start to speak things into existence, something happens. The universe shifts and bends to ensure that you get what you want. You simply have to slow down and notice it.

I’ve experienced this firsthand. It started with a visit to my husband’s grandparents. We rarely get the opportunity to spend quality time together, as visits usually consist of seeing other family members. This results in lots of running around and quick lunches.

This time we had a full evening together, consisting of dinner at their home. Before dinner, we caught up on all kinds of life happenings, and then his grandmother and I broke off into the kitchen.

As she chopped up more veggies for the salad, I told her about what I’d been up to recently. Somehow, we got on the topic of my wanting to learn to sew. It’s one of the reasons I’ve rethought my approach for the year, as I wanted to learn last year and, of course, never got around to it.

As soon as I mentioned sewing, she lit up! She was thrilled to hear someone was interested in something she’s been passionate about for years. Not only does she love to sew, but she’s hosted classes in her home for the past 15+ years— passing on her love of sewing to so many others.

We immediately took to the basement stairs, and upon our descent, we were greeted with rows of sewing machines, fabrics, threads, and various other items that I had never seen before.

This is her happy place— a space where she can create, teach, connect, and enjoy her passion without interruption. It was beautiful. It was the embodiment of a person going all in on what they love, and I loved that.

Her excitement to show me everything was reminiscent of a child showing you their favorite toys; there was a light in her that shone so bright. Her excitement made me even more excited to start my own sewing journey.

After the tour, she told me to hold off on buying anything. She would send me a list of what I needed, so I could easily get set up. I told her I would, and we moved on to dinner.

Three days later, a package was delivered to my home… A brand new sewing machine!

I cried. It was so sweet of her to not only share her passion with me, but to then make such a large investment in me and my new hobby.

The point here, that sharing your goals and dreams is so important! People want to help you, and the universe will always conspire in your favor.

It took me a long time to realize this. I loved to hear about what my friends, family, and others were up to, but when it came to sharing my own inner world, I was always convincing myself that they didn’t need to hear about those silly things.

They do.

Life is a balance of give and take, and when that balance is out of whack, you will feel it. I felt it. I ignored it. I’m no longer doing that in 2026.

Share your dreams, big or small. You will be surprised by who resonates with them. Talk about your goals, silly hobbies, and greatest passions. You never know what the simple act of talking about something will ignite.
